IT’S MAY AND TIME FOR

AAP’S “CAUGHT READING” PROGRAM

This may be one most of you authors don’t know about. For the past  nine years, AAP (Association of American Publishers) has designated the month of May as “Caught Reading” month. The campaign that “catches” public officials and celebrities reading their favorite books

is, of course, designed to publicize the importance of reading books.

The program has become particularly popular with politicians who love to have their photo taken and then mounted on posters to be hung in schools and libraries in their districts.

This year audio books have been added to the mix to create the “Get Caught Listening” project in recognition of the growing importance of the audio segment. Scheduled to tie in to the June celebration of National Audiobooks Month, the program will feature authors praising audiobooks as they get caught listening to them.

It may sound a bit frivolous and especially self-serving for the politicians, but any effort to publicize books—to be read or listened to—should be welcomed by authors.
